Area of practice
Skin cancer medicine and surgery.
Skin examinations, dermoscopic assessment, biopsy, and surgical management of skin lesions — provided by Dr Amir Waly as part of his independent specialist GP practice at Rudloc Road Medical & Dental Centre.
Skin cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia. Early detection improves treatment options and outcomes for most types of skin cancer.
A skin examination involves a structured review of all areas of skin, supported by dermoscopy — the magnified examination of individual lesions. Where a lesion warrants further assessment, the next step may be photographic monitoring, biopsy, or surgical removal.
Most procedures are performed in the clinic under local anaesthetic. Histopathology results are typically available within one to two weeks, and you will be contacted regardless of the result.

Practice policy
How skin cancer assessment and surgery are provided.
The standing policies below apply to every skin examination, biopsy, and surgical procedure offered within this area of practice.
- 01 Clinical assessment first
- Not every skin lesion requires biopsy or removal. The decision is based on clinical assessment supported by dermoscopy.
- 02 Informed consent
- Written informed consent is obtained before any biopsy, excision, or other procedure. You may withdraw consent at any time.
- 03 Risks of skin surgery
- All skin procedures carry risks, including bleeding, bruising, infection, scarring, nerve injury, and the possibility of incomplete excision. These risks will be discussed with you before any procedure.
- 04 Histopathology results
- You will be contacted with the result of any biopsy regardless of the finding. Urgent or unexpected findings are communicated by phone on the day.
- 05 Referral when appropriate
- Lesions on cosmetically sensitive sites, lesions requiring wider margins, or complex cases may be referred to a dermatologist, plastic surgeon, or other appropriately qualified colleague.
- 06 Surveillance
- Recommended review intervals are individualised based on personal risk factors, including history of skin cancer, family history, and cumulative sun exposure.
- 07 Costs and Medicare
- Standard consultation fees apply. Medicare rebates apply where eligible. Fees for any procedure are discussed and agreed before it is performed.
- 08 When to seek earlier review
- If a lesion is new, changing, painful, bleeding, or rapidly growing, please contact the clinic to arrange an earlier appointment. In a medical emergency call 000.
